Karen Kennedy, LPC-S EMDR Therapist

About Karen

I am not your stereotypical therapist. My clients have stated that I am warm, relatable and approachable. My work can be spontaneous, improvisational, but I tailor it to meet your specific needs and desires, and it is consistently informed by different areas of study.

Life Experience

Originally, I was not in the mental health field. I worked in a variety of jobs, and I raised a wonderful child (I still consider that to be my best accomplishment). All of these things are often referred to as “real” life experience, and that experience does inform the work that I do with clients.

Toward mid-life, I reinvented myself.  I had wanted to be a therapist for a very long time, and, not wanting to have regrets, I went back to school.  It was a good decision, as I love the work that I do today.

Education And Training

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s Degree in Counseling from St. Edward’s University.  After graduating from St. Eds, I interned at a low cost mental health clinic.  I also worked in the private practice of my supervisor prior to opening my own practice.  I believe that it is important as a therapist to study and learn as the field is constantly evolving.  I enjoy attending workshops and study groups in an effort to learn new ways to help my clients.  In addition to being trained in EMDR, I am trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.  Sensorimotor deals with the mind/body connection.

One of my passions is working with adults who grew up in families where there was alcohol or substance abuse.  If this description fits you, there are certain patterns of behavior that you learned as coping skills during your childhood.  As an adult, you may now find yourself guessing about what ‘normal’ is, and also finding that you have difficulty in intimate relationships.  I would like to help you recognize and change these patterns and learn to have a healthy and productive adulthood.
